About Greece: Many truths and a few half truths.

Beautiful video created by the British Hellenic Chamber of Commerce. Presents several accomplishments of modern Greeks, several positive features of the country, its richness and beauty, the many services it offers, its products and the modern infrastructure that it has developed in the last 20 years.

It also presents a few half truths about Greeks and Greece: that exports have risen by 30% in the last year only because they were ridiculously low, that Greece has an incredibly small high tech sector (if any at all), it has no modern railways and its motorways leave a lot to be desired too. Also the Olympic Games – although a celebration of sports and with a wonderfully staged opening and closing ceremony, made by Greek artists – are part of the ‘bill’ that we are paying today, and that the crisis is not due to a war, earthquake or other natural disaster but is of our own making. So Greece will of course stand on its feet eventually, with or without the European loans, but for these feet to be solid ones, there is also a lot that needs to be changed in the people’s minds first and the in the country’s structures and institutions second.

PS:  the lovely harbour on the opening slide is the medieval port of Nafpaktos (Lepanto), my husband’s native city! 🙂
